modern calligraphy & Design
Michelle Compton | Owner, Simply Stated
I have always had a passion for handwritten language. There is an intimacy in pen and paper writing that is lacking in our modern forms of communication. My ring bearer's pillow in my wedding was my great grandmother's old Bible, filled with her shorthand in the margins. I have kept all of my favorite little love notes from my husband from our dating and engaged years. Even now, I have begun writing letters to my daughter and son in journals for them to read someday in adulthood.
I began practicing hand lettering and calligraphy as a tool to help me memorize Scripture. My day-to-day handwriting has never been much to look at, but hand lettering and calligraphy felt more like sketching or painting. This creative outlet was therapeutic, helped me start to achieve my memorization goals, and sparked project after project. As my work improved, friends and family began to see potential in my art to make it into a business. After much prayer, dreaming, and scheming, my Simply Stated Etsy shop went live in August 2016. Since then, I have had the opportunity to be featured, along with other amazing women and their beautiful businesses, by Junebug Weddings, Green Wedding Shoes, and The Brides of Oklahoma. I often have the opportunity to have my lettering featured in styled shoots by talented Oklahoma photographers, or shared by other businesses on social media. I absolutely love the work that I have the opportunity to do with Simply Stated, and I am grateful to be able to do all of this work from our home in Shawnee, OK, so that I can continue to focus on my passion for being a homeschooling, stay-at-home mom.
I love any project that gives me the freedom to create. I love how words connect us. I love finding simple beauty in the intimate details. Thank you for supporting local small businesses. The best people shop small.
